Dyckman Street (/ daɪkmɪn / DIKE-man), occasionally called West 200th Street, is a street in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It is commonly considered to be a crosstown street because it runs from the Hudson River to the Harlem River and intersects Broadway.
During the British occupation of Manhattan in 1776-1783, William Dyckman and his family sought refuge in upstate New York. When the War ended, William returned to find the family home and orchards destroyed.
Manhattan’s last Dutch colonial farmhouse has overlooked bustling Broadway for more than 200 years. Today, it reflects the diverse and energetic populations that call Inwood home. Jan Dyckman established a farm near the northern tip of Manhattan in the 1660s.
William Dyckman built the Dyckman house in 1785 after his family's prior home was destroyed in the Revolutionary War — and it still stands as Manhattan's last farmhouse today.
The Dyckman family, as enslavers, exploited enslaved Africans to profit from their many skills, which were implemented to farm the land, prepare household goods, and assist in daily domestic work.
Jan Dyckman, a shoemaker, and another Dutch settler, Jan Nagel, together purchased much of the land between present-day 155th Street and the northern end of the island. Members of the Dyckman and Nagel families lived on this land for three generations, until the Revolutionary War broke out.
